On the tranquil island of Kauai, nestled amidst rolling ranchlands and serene coastlines, whispers of an extraordinary construction project began to circulate. Behind a towering 6-foot wall and tight-lipped security, something colossal was taking shape—a structure shrouded in mystery and speculation.
For years, locals and onlookers alike wondered what the Meta CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, was building on his sprawling Hawaiian property.
A “basement,” as Zuckerberg calls it—a term he insists downplays its grandeur. But for anyone familiar with the rumors, this “basement” was no ordinary underground refuge.
In a recent interview with The Circuit’s Emily Chang, Zuckerberg dismissed the sensationalism surrounding his 5,000-square-foot underground bunker. “It’s just a little shelter,” he remarked casually, describing it as a safe space to retreat during hurricanes. “The whole thing got blown out of proportion, as if the entire ranch was some kind of doomsday bunker. It’s just not true.”
Yet, the details that have emerged paint a more elaborate picture. According to investigations and reports, Zuckerberg’s property includes far more than a simple shelter.
The compound boasts two sprawling mansions equipped with every luxury imaginable: gyms, pools, saunas, a hot tub, a cold plunge, and even a tennis court. Surrounding these primary residences are agricultural facilities, multiple guest houses, and an intricate network of treehouses connected by rope bridges.
And then, of course, there’s the bunker. Hidden beneath the lush greens, this underground structure features a fortified, concrete-filled metal door and has been described as capable of withstanding almost anything.
The level of secrecy surrounding its construction was unprecedented. Workers were bound by ironclad nondisclosure agreements, and rumors of strict enforcement spread like wildfire. Tales of employees being dismissed for social media posts added to its mystery.
But Zuckerberg insists his Kauai ranch is not a fortress—it’s a labor of love. He’s embraced ranching, aiming to produce what he describes as the “highest quality beef in the world.” His vision extends beyond cattle, involving vertical integration that includes growing macadamia nuts and brewing beer on-site to enhance the cows’ diets.

Since acquiring the land in 2014, the Meta CEO had set his sights on transforming Koolau Ranch into a sprawling estate spanning 1,400 acres.
According to planning documents, the property was to feature a 5,000-square-foot underground shelter, self-sustaining energy and food supplies, and luxurious amenities. The estimated cost? Over $270 million.
For the tight-knit community of Kauai, the project was both a marvel and a mystery. With a population of just 73,000, many residents traced their roots back to Native Hawaiians and immigrants who once worked the island’s sugarcane fields. Over time, as the plantations faded, tourism became the lifeblood of the local economy.

Interviews then with workers and reviews of court documents hinted at a web of legal maneuvering and political connections that helped bring the project to life while critics questioned whether the billionaire’s ambitions were at odds with the island’s culture and community.
Though much of Kauai has seen a wave of tourist-driven transformation, the island has managed to preserve its small-town charm. Locals still recall the days when the entire island functioned with just one traffic light—the second didn’t appear until 1973. Wild chickens roam freely, feral cats dart through lush undergrowth, and life unfolds at a rhythm dictated by the tides. Neighbors greet each other by name, surfers ride the waves, fishermen cast their lines from the shore, and hunters trek into the mountains in search of wild pigs.
Speculation ran wild. One rumor claimed the compound is a sprawling underground city. Others imagined it as a post-apocalyptic bunker for civilization’s collapse. While the truth doesn’t quite match the more fantastical stories, it’s no less extraordinary.
Detailed planning documents revealed the makings of an extravagant techno-paradise, blending cutting-edge engineering with indulgent luxury.
At its heart are two sprawling mansions with a combined floor area rivaling that of a professional football field—57,000 square feet. The mansions boast multiple elevators, offices, conference rooms, and an industrial-sized kitchen.
In total, the compound features more than a dozen buildings, offering at least 30 bedrooms and 30 bathrooms.
But that’s just the beginning.
In a nearby wooded area, plans called for 11 disk-shaped treehouses (UFOs inspired?) connected by a network of intricate rope bridges.
Beyond the mansions, another structure will house a full-size gym, multiple pools, a sauna, hot tub, cold plunge, and a tennis court. Scattered across the property are guest houses and operational buildings, all designed with the meticulous attention to detail that has become a hallmark of the project.
Security measures at the site are staggering, with plans showing more than 20 cameras on just one smaller ranch building alone. Keypad-operated and soundproofed doors are common throughout the compound, while “blind doors” in the library blend seamlessly with the surrounding walls, concealing their purpose.
As per reports, Zuckerberg’s property has caused tension with locals and indigenous groups on the island. Though he and his family have contributed to local charities and community programs, their presence has remained controversial.
