When you’re the richest person on Earth, your dreams rarely get turned down. That seems to be the case for Elon Musk, who has taken another step toward making Starbase, Texas not just a launch site but an actual city.

Musk recently announced on X (formerly Twitter), “SpaceX HQ will now officially be in the city of Starbase, Texas!”
This isn’t the first time Musk has hinted at such ambitions. Back in 2021, he casually tweeted about “creating the city of Starbase, Texas.” Fast forward to today, and the wheels are truly in motion. SpaceX has formally requested Cameron County officials to hold an election to incorporate Starbase as a municipality.

What’s Starbase?

Nestled on Boca Chica Beach at the southern tip of Texas, right by the Mexican border, Starbase is SpaceX’s nerve center. This facility isn’t just any rocket pad; it’s where SpaceX builds, tests, and launches its Starship rockets, designed to take humans to the Moon and Mars.

The site employs over 3,400 full-time staff and contractors, according to a recent local assessment. With the construction of a massive warehouse, Starfactory, to replace production tents, it’s clear that SpaceX is scaling up operations here.

Why Incorporate?

Kathryn Lueders, Starbase’s General Manager, outlined the reasoning in a petition to Cameron County: “To continue growing the workforce necessary to rapidly develop and manufacture Starship, we need the ability to grow Starbase as a community.”

Incorporation would pave the way for building amenities that make the area a more livable place for current residents and prospective workers alike. From streamlined processes to potential infrastructure improvements, the move is aimed at transforming Starbase into a world-class hub—not just for rockets but for people.

Judge Eddie Treviño Jr., Cameron County’s top official, acknowledged this as the first official petition despite incorporation talks dating back to 2021. He assured that the petition would undergo a thorough review before any decisions are made.

Texas, Musk’s Favorite State

Musk’s love affair with Texas is no secret. In July, he announced the relocation of SpaceX and X (formerly Twitter) headquarters to Texas from California, citing a controversial gender identity law as the “last straw.”
This isn’t the first of Musk’s companies to make the move. Tesla shifted its headquarters to Texas in 2021, though California remains its engineering hub. Musk himself became a Texas resident the same year, no doubt enjoying the state’s lack of income tax.

Not Without Controversy

Local environmental groups like Save RGV have raised concerns, alleging environmental violations, including improper waste disposal. SpaceX has dismissed these claims as “frivolous,” pointing to a state assessment that found no environmental risks.
